Blocklords Review

Updated Apr 24, 2026Fact Checked
TL;DR

BLOCKLORDS is a medieval grand strategy game where players can choose to rule, fight, farm, or trade, shaped by the promise that every player's choices would shape a persistent world. Built on Immutable X and Polygon, it attracted attention with its ambitious vision and solid art direction. But the game has been in beta for years with limited playable content, no token, and a tiny player base. The grand strategy vision remains mostly unrealized, and the project feels like it is running out of runway.

  • Medieval grand strategy with multiple player roles (Lord, Knight, Farmer, Trader)
  • Built on Immutable X and Polygon for gas-free NFT transactions
  • No token launched, economy based on NFT heroes and items
  • Still in beta after years of development with limited content
  • Small team with limited resources compared to the scope of ambition
3/10
Play2Moon VerdictPoor

BLOCKLORDS has one of the more interesting concepts in blockchain gaming: a medieval grand strategy where every player role matters. But concept and execution are different things. After years of development, the game remains in beta with a fraction of the promised features. The small team's ambition vastly exceeds their resources. Unless significant funding or a breakthrough moment materializes, BLOCKLORDS risks joining the long list of promising web3 games that never reached their potential.

What is BLOCKLORDS?

BLOCKLORDS is a medieval grand strategy game developed by MetaKing Studios, where players take on different societal roles: Lords who rule territories, Knights who fight battles, Farmers who produce resources, and Traders who manage economies. The vision is a persistent world shaped by player choices, where political alliances, resource wars, and individual ambitions create emergent narratives.

Built on Immutable X and Polygon, BLOCKLORDS drew attention for its ambitious scope and unique approach to web3 gaming. Rather than another idle clicker or card game, it promised a deep strategy experience where blockchain ownership would mean something. Your hero's lineage, your land holdings, your dynasty's reputation would all persist on-chain.

The reality, however, has been a protracted development cycle with far less content than the vision suggested.

Gameplay Deep Dive

BLOCKLORDS aims to offer four distinct player experiences:

Farming Mode (Available) The most developed gameplay loop. Players manage farms, grow crops, raise livestock, and produce goods. Resources can be used for crafting or sold. It works but is fairly basic compared to dedicated farming games like Stardew Valley.

Combat Mode (Limited Beta) Heroes engage in battles, currently limited to basic PvP skirmishes. The combat is turn-based with hero stats and equipment affecting outcomes. Full army warfare and siege mechanics remain largely unrealized.

Dynasty System (Partially Implemented) Heroes can breed to create new heroes with inherited traits. This dynasty system is one of BLOCKLORDS' more unique ideas, where your hero's descendants carry forward genetic traits that affect their abilities. However, the current implementation is bare-bones.

Lordship / Grand Strategy (Mostly Unrealized) The territorial control, political alliance, and economic management layer that was supposed to be BLOCKLORDS' defining feature remains mostly aspirational. The interconnected world where Lords tax Farmers, hire Knights, and negotiate with Traders exists more in the pitch deck than in the game.

How to Earn

Without a token, BLOCKLORDS' earning potential is extremely limited:

  • NFT hero trading: Buy and sell heroes on Immutable X marketplace
  • Resource generation: Farm resources that may have future NFT/trading value
  • Dynasty breeding: Create new heroes through the breeding system
  • Future tournament prizes: Potential competitive rewards (not yet implemented)

Hero NFT prices have declined significantly from their initial sale periods. Marketplace activity is minimal, with few buyers and sellers. There is no staking, no yield farming, no token emissions. The only monetization path is NFT appreciation, which requires the game to grow its player base substantially.

Tokenomics

BLOCKLORDS has not launched a dedicated token. The economic model relies entirely on:

  • Hero NFTs: The primary tradeable assets, with varying rarities and traits
  • In-game resources: Currently not tokenized but may become tradeable
  • Land NFTs: Territory ownership planned but not fully implemented

The absence of a token is a double-edged sword. It avoids the inflation spirals that destroyed other projects, but it also means there is no speculative incentive to drive user acquisition. In a market where players expect earning opportunities, BLOCKLORDS offers very little.

Team & Backers

MetaKing Studios is a relatively small independent game studio. The team is distributed globally with members in Turkey, Europe, and Asia. Exact team size has fluctuated but appears to be in the range of 20-40 people.

The company has raised funding through NFT sales and a small seed round, but has not disclosed large venture capital backing comparable to competitors. This funding limitation is arguably the root cause of the game's slow development, as the scope of a grand strategy MMO requires significant resources that a small indie team struggles to muster.

BLOCKLORDS has partnered with Immutable for blockchain infrastructure and received grants/support through Immutable's gaming ecosystem. This provides some technological runway but does not solve the fundamental resource constraints.

What Went Right / What Went Wrong

What went right: The concept is genuinely interesting. A medieval grand strategy where different player roles create an interconnected economy is the kind of game that blockchain ownership could meaningfully enhance. The hero dynasty system, where descendants inherit traits from their ancestors, is a clever use of NFT composability. The art direction, particularly for hero characters, is charming and distinctive. The team has been persistent, continuing to build through the bear market.

What went wrong: The ambition far exceeds the resources. Building a grand strategy MMO is one of the hardest challenges in game development. Studios with hundreds of developers and nine-figure budgets have struggled with it. A small indie team attempting this while also integrating blockchain technology was always going to be an enormous challenge. The result is a game that has been in various stages of beta for years with only a fraction of the promised features. Player counts reflect this gap between promise and reality. The lack of a token or clear economic model means there is little incentive for players to stick around during content droughts. BLOCKLORDS needed either much more funding or a much narrower initial scope. It got neither, and the game has suffered for it.
